A GREAT TEACHER - POEM
A great teacher
encourages students to be more
than they saw in themselves.
A great teacher is empathetic.
He or she understands
that each student is fighting
some type of battle.
A great teacher works to get better at his or her craft.
Every day.
A great teacher is passionately enthusiastic about
what and whom
they teach.
A great teacher sees a student for who they are,
and who they can become.
A great teacher knows
his or her students,
their families,
their culture,
their values,
and believes that the social curriculum
is what the academic curriculum is
built upon.
A great teacher intentionally stands witness to hopefulness,
learns through proximity to need,
understands the power of identity,
commits to do the uncomfortable
to advocate for students.
A great teacher points kids in the right direction to look,
but doesn’t always tell them what to see.
A great teacher
Inspires.
Illuminates.
Innovates.
Ignites passion.
A great teacher is a teammate in learning,
an inspiration and resource to their colleagues.
Unflappably hopeful.
A great teacher can sense desperation in a child’s eyes,
and fight to give the child a sense of hope.
A great teacher never gives up.
A great teacher is the medium between student and curriculum,
contemplation and enduring understanding,
past experiences and existence in our globalized,
interconnected world.
A great teacher
identifies obstacles and
removes them.
A great teacher is one who can look through the facts of the present
to see the possibilities of the future.
A great teacher puts relationships first,
models being a learner,
shows respect,
is vulnerable,
apologizes for their mistakes,
and smiles a lot.
A great teacher is flexible and forgiving.
A great teacher stops talking
and allows their kids to share some responsibility.
A great teacher knows they serve the community where they teach.
Advocating for students, families and colleagues,
striving to cultivate virtues,
helping students see themselves as
capable of more than they ever thought they
could accomplish.
A great teacher greets each day with renewed hope for the future.
Never underestimating what each student has to offer.
A great teacher plants trees
under whose shade she or he never expects to sit.
A great teacher models how to be a great human.
They inspire us to be our best.
A great teacher knows the hearts and minds and eyes--
Eyes that are lit
by questions
and inspired to discover.
A great teacher never,
ever,
stops
learning.
“Prepare the child for the path, not the path for the child.”
than they saw in themselves.
